Fencing cost UK 2026
Garden fencing typically costs £55–£140 per metre fitted in the UK depending on type, height, and post material. A typical 3-bed semi rear garden (~30m perimeter) lands £2,000–£4,500. Concrete posts cost more upfront but outlast timber 2–3×.

What drives the price
- Panel type — lap (overlap) cheapest. Closeboard (vertical featheredge) more secure, more expensive. Slatted/horizontal modern.
- Post material — timber posts cheaper but rot at ground level in 8–12 years. Concrete posts last 25+ years and don't rot. Pay upfront, save long-term.
- Height — 1.8m (6ft) is the standard maximum without planning. Up to 2m permitted at the rear of dwelling. Front-garden fences limited to 1m without planning.
- Ground conditions — clay soil + tree roots add £200–£800 in difficult digging. Steep slopes need stepped fence (extra cost).
- Removal of old fence — usually included but check. Concrete posts in old fence add labour to remove (£20–£50/post).

How we estimated these ranges
This is a guide only. The ranges below are intended for early budgeting and trade benchmarking. They are not a substitute for a site visit or an itemised quote from a qualified tradesperson. Always get a site-specific quote before agreeing work.
What's included in these ranges: typical labour costs, common materials at standard specification, and routine preparation or installation work for a standard project of this type.
What's excluded: unusual access (multi-storey, restricted parking), unforeseen structural issues, specialist design or architect fees, planning and building control application fees, premium or high-end finishes, emergency or out-of-hours work, and regional extremes.
Regional note: London, the South East and remote rural areas can vary significantly from the UK averages shown. London labour rates in particular can run 30–50% higher than national averages on the same scope.
Sources and checks used: publicly available UK trade supplier pricing (2025–2026), common day-rate and labour-duration assumptions used in trade quoting, internal example quote structures from TailoredQuote platform data, and where relevant cross-referenced regional contractor surveys and BCIS-style construction cost data.

Concrete cost more (£15–£25/post extra) but outlast timber 2–3× and don't rot. Recommended for any fence you want to last 20+ years.
Up to 2m at the rear, 1m at the front, no planning needed. Beyond that needs planning.
Check your title deeds. If unclear, the convention is the side with the smooth panels faces the neighbour. Either way, both sides need to agree before you replace a shared boundary.
