Free quote calculator
A simple labour + materials + markup calculator for UK trades. Type your numbers, see the running total, print or take it forward into a branded quote.
Note: This calculator is a starting-point sanity check, not a formal quote. Real quotes need site-specific adjustments, regional rates, supplier prices on the day, contingency for the unknown, and the right scope of works wording. Use TailoredQuote to turn this number into a fully scoped, branded quote PDF.
Worked example
With the defaults loaded above — 8 hours labour at £45/hour, £200 materials at 25% markup — the maths is:
- Labour: 8 hrs × £45 = £360
- Materials: £200 supplier cost
- Markup: £200 × 25% = £50 additional
- Materials with markup: £200 + £50 = £250
- Total: £360 + £250 = £610
How to use this calculator
- Type your labour hours and hourly rate in the top row.
- Add the supplier cost of materials in the third box.
- Set the markup % you want to apply to materials only (labour stays at your hourly rate).
- The total updates as you type. Print, save or carry it into a branded TailoredQuote PDF.
Tips for accurate quoting
Labour
- Track your actual hours on similar past jobs as reference.
- Budget 10–20% contingency for unexpected complications.
- UK 2026 ranges: general builder £35–£60/hr, specialist trades (electrician, plumber, gas engineer) £45–£90/hr. London and the South East run at the upper end.
Materials
- Quote at customer-facing prices, not your trade discount.
- Add 5–10% for waste, breakage and off-cuts.
- Add VAT if you're VAT registered (TailoredQuote handles VAT on the PDF).
Markup vs margin
Markup is a percentage added to cost (cost £100 + 30% markup = £130 selling price). Margin is the percentage of the selling price that's profit (£130 selling, £100 cost = 23.1% margin). Most UK trades quote in markup terms but track in margin terms. This calculator works in markup.
